Community First Aid Workshop | Standing Together Autism Group | Disability Week | The Word, South Shields
Everyone Deserves the Confidence to Save a Life
First aid is a life skill that everyone should have the opportunity to learn.
Unfortunately, many people living with disabilities or additional needs have had limited opportunities to access practical first aid education that is delivered in a way that suits their individual learning styles.
At First Aid Saves Lives CIC, we believe life-saving skills should be accessible to everyone.
That belief was proudly demonstrated during Disability Week, when we delivered an engaging and fully inclusive Community First Aid Workshop for members of the Speaking Up Together Autism Group at The Word in South Shields.
The workshop focused on building confidence, encouraging participation and giving learners practical skills they could use to help someone in an emergency.

Celebrating Disability Week Through Life-Saving Education
Disability Week provides an opportunity to celebrate inclusion, recognise achievements and highlight the importance of creating opportunities that are accessible to everyone.
For us, there was no better way to support Disability Week than by helping people gain the confidence to save a life.
Working alongside Speaking Up Together Autism Group, we created a workshop that was practical, welcoming and adapted to meet the needs of every participant.
The emphasis wasn’t on passing a test.
It wasn’t about remembering lots of complicated information.
It was about giving everyone the opportunity to learn, practise and build confidence in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Creating an Inclusive Learning Environment
Every learner is different.
Some people learn by listening.
Others prefer watching demonstrations.
Many gain confidence through practical experience.
Throughout the workshop, Adam and Helen used a variety of teaching methods to ensure everyone had the opportunity to learn in a way that suited them.
The pace of the session allowed learners to ask questions, practise skills and repeat techniques until they felt comfortable.
By creating a calm and supportive atmosphere, participants were able to build confidence without feeling under pressure.
This approach is something we believe is essential when delivering community first aid education.

What We Covered During the Workshop
The workshop introduced participants to the essential actions they could take if someone became seriously ill or injured.
Topics included:
✅ Recognising an emergency
✅ Keeping yourself safe
✅ Calling 999
✅ Helping someone who is unconscious
✅ Placing someone into the recovery position
✅ Recognising and responding to choking
✅ Understanding when CPR may be needed
Each topic was demonstrated before learners had the opportunity to practise the skills themselves using realistic training equipment.
Learning Through Practical Experience
One of the biggest strengths of community first aid workshops is allowing participants to have a go.
During the practical activities, learners worked together, practised recovery positions and explored how to help someone who may be choking or unconscious.
Every activity was delivered with patience, encouragement and plenty of positive reinforcement.
There were smiles, laughter and lots of thoughtful questions throughout the session.
Watching learners grow in confidence as the workshop progressed was incredibly rewarding.
Building Confidence Instead of Fear
Many people believe first aid is complicated.
Others worry they might make a mistake.
These concerns are completely normal.
One of the most important messages throughout the workshop was that doing something is almost always better than doing nothing.
Knowing how to call for help, keep someone safe and begin basic first aid can make a significant difference while waiting for emergency services.
By removing fear and replacing it with practical experience, participants left feeling far more confident than when they arrived.
Why Inclusive First Aid Matters
Every member of our community deserves access to life-saving education.
People living with disabilities, autism or additional support needs are just as likely to witness an emergency involving a family member, friend or member of the public.
By making first aid training more inclusive, we’re helping create communities where more people feel able to step forward and help.
Inclusion isn’t simply about providing access.
It’s about creating learning experiences where everyone feels valued, respected and capable.
That philosophy sits at the heart of everything we do at First Aid Saves Lives CIC.
Working Together to Make a Difference
Community partnerships are essential to helping us reach people who may not otherwise have access to first aid education.
We’d like to thank everyone at Speaking Up Together Autism Group for inviting us to be part of Disability Week and to The Word in South Shields for providing such an excellent venue for the workshop.
Together, we’re helping to create safer, stronger and more confident communities.
