Supporting Inclusive Employment Through Emergency First Aid Training

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) | Sea Change | South Shields

Building Confidence for Those Supporting Their Community

Creating opportunities for people to develop skills, confidence and independence changes lives.

Organisations like Sea Change do exactly that every day by supporting neurodivergent adults and helping people gain valuable work experience, confidence and employment opportunities within a safe and welcoming environment.

As with any workplace, being prepared for an emergency is an important part of creating a safe environment for everyone.

That’s why First Aid Saves Lives CIC was delighted to deliver an Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course for members of the Sea Change team in South Shields.

Throughout the day, staff developed practical life-saving skills, gained a nationally recognised qualification and, most importantly, built the confidence to respond effectively should an emergency ever occur.

Supporting an Organisation That Changes Lives

Sea Change is far more than a workplace.

It is a place where people are encouraged to develop new skills, build confidence and become part of a supportive community.

The work carried out by the organisation makes a genuine difference to people’s lives, and we were proud to support that work by helping ensure staff are prepared should a medical emergency arise.

Investing in first aid training demonstrates a commitment not only to legal compliance but also to the wellbeing of colleagues, volunteers, visitors and everyone who uses the organisation’s services.

Practical First Aid for Real-Life Situations

The Emergency First Aid at Work course is designed to prepare learners for a wide variety of workplace emergencies.

Throughout the day, participants explored realistic scenarios, discussed how emergencies develop and practised the practical skills needed to provide immediate assistance while waiting for the emergency services.

Topics covered included:

✅ Assessing an emergency safely

✅ Primary Survey

✅ Calling 999 effectively

✅ Adult CPR

✅ Safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

✅ Recovery Position

✅ Choking

✅ Severe Bleeding

✅ Shock

✅ Seizures

✅ Minor Workplace Injuries

Every topic combined demonstrations with practical exercises, ensuring learners had plenty of opportunities to practise each skill.

Learning Through Practical Experience

First aid is something that should be experienced, not simply read about.

Throughout the course, learners worked together through practical scenarios, practising CPR, recovery positions and emergency response techniques using professional training equipment.

As confidence grew, discussions naturally developed around situations that could occur within their own workplace.

Relating the training to real-life situations helps learners remember the skills and feel far more confident applying them should they ever be needed.

That confidence is one of the biggest outcomes we hope every learner takes away.

More Than a Qualification

While every learner successfully completed a nationally recognised qualification, the most valuable achievement was something far more personal.

Confidence.

Confidence to remain calm.

Confidence to assess a situation.

Confidence to make decisions.

Confidence to help another person while waiting for professional assistance.

These are skills that don’t just stay at work.

They can help protect family members, friends, neighbours and complete strangers.

Why Workplace First Aid Matters

Medical emergencies can happen anywhere.

Whether someone becomes seriously ill, suffers a fall, chokes or experiences a cardiac arrest, having trained first aiders nearby can make an enormous difference.

By investing in accredited first aid training, organisations create safer environments for everyone who walks through their doors.

For organisations like Sea Change, where supporting people is at the heart of everything they do, those skills become even more valuable.

Working Together to Strengthen Our Communities

At First Aid Saves Lives CIC, we’re passionate about supporting charities, social enterprises and community organisations across the North East.

Every organisation we train helps strengthen our communities by increasing the number of people who have the confidence to respond in an emergency.

Working together means more people are prepared, more organisations are resilient and more lives could potentially be saved.

Thank You To Sea Change

We’d like to thank everyone at Sea Change for welcoming us and fully embracing the practical nature of the course.

It was fantastic to work with such an enthusiastic group who were eager to learn, ask questions and develop new skills.

We hope the knowledge and confidence gained during the course continues to benefit both your team and everyone you support.
