Building Confidence Through Emergency First Aid Training with AutismAble

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) | AutismAble | South Shields

Preparing the People Who Support Others Every Day

Providing care and support for autistic people and individuals with additional needs is both rewarding and incredibly important.

Whether supporting young people through activities, helping families access services or creating safe and inclusive spaces, staff and volunteers are often the people others turn to in times of need.

While medical emergencies are thankfully rare, being prepared to respond calmly and confidently can make all the difference.

That’s why First Aid Saves Lives CIC was delighted to deliver an Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course for the fantastic team at AutismAble in South Shields.

The one-day accredited course provided learners with practical, hands-on skills that will help them respond effectively should an emergency ever arise.

Supporting an Organisation That Makes a Difference

AutismAble provides invaluable support to autistic children, young people, adults and their families across South Tyneside and the wider North East.

Their work helps individuals develop confidence, independence, friendships and opportunities within a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment.

Because their team works closely with people every day, ensuring staff have up-to-date first aid knowledge is an important part of creating safe and supportive environments.

We were proud to play a small part in helping them continue that fantastic work.

An Accredited Course With Practical Skills

The Emergency First Aid at Work qualification is designed to give learners the confidence to deal with a range of workplace emergencies.

Throughout the day, participants explored both the theory behind emergency first aid and, more importantly, developed the practical skills needed to respond confidently in real-life situations.

The course covered:

✅ Assessing an emergency safely

✅ Prioritising casualties

✅ Contacting the emergency services

✅ Adult CPR

✅ Safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

✅ Recovery Position

✅ Choking

✅ Seizures

✅ Severe bleeding

✅ Shock

✅ Minor injuries

Every topic combined instructor demonstrations with practical scenarios and hands-on practice.

Learning by Doing

At First Aid Saves Lives CIC, we firmly believe people learn best by getting involved.

Throughout the course, learners spent time practising CPR, placing casualties into the recovery position, managing choking incidents and responding to realistic first aid scenarios.

These practical exercises help build confidence, allowing learners to apply their knowledge rather than simply remembering information from a presentation.

As confidence increased throughout the day, discussions became more interactive, questions became more detailed and learners began sharing experiences from their own workplaces.

Those conversations are often where some of the most valuable learning takes place.

First Aid That Reflects the Workplace

Every organisation is different.

One of the strengths of delivering first aid training to organisations like AutismAble is being able to relate scenarios directly to the environments learners work in every day.

By discussing realistic situations that staff may encounter, learners were able to think about how they would apply their new skills within familiar surroundings.

This approach helps make training more meaningful, more memorable and ultimately more useful.

Confidence Is the Most Important Outcome

Many people arrive on a first aid course worried about doing something wrong.

By the end of the day, those concerns are usually replaced with confidence.

Confidence to recognise an emergency.

Confidence to make decisions.

Confidence to begin helping while waiting for professional assistance.

That confidence doesn’t come from simply reading a manual.

It comes from practising the skills, asking questions and understanding that nobody is expected to be perfect.

Taking action is what matters most.

Why Accredited First Aid Training Matters

Emergency First Aid at Work is far more than a workplace requirement.

It helps organisations create safer environments for staff, volunteers, visitors and the people they support every day.

For charities and community organisations, having trained first aiders provides reassurance to families, colleagues and service users alike.

It demonstrates a commitment to safety, wellbeing and providing the highest standards of care.

Working Together to Build Safer Communities

At First Aid Saves Lives CIC, we’re passionate about supporting charities and community organisations across the North East.

By working together, we can help ensure more staff and volunteers have the knowledge, confidence and practical skills needed to respond during an emergency.

Every learner trained strengthens not only their organisation but also the wider community.

Thank You To AutismAble

We’d like to thank everyone at AutismAble for choosing First Aid Saves Lives CIC to deliver your Emergency First Aid at Work training.
